Magic Carpet

I was a finalist for the Hollywood role of Jasmine in the live-action Disney movie Aladdin in 2018.  I sang “A Whole New World” for my audition. In this Blackbox installation at the CADVC at UMBC, I sing my rendition of the song, with an audio track comprising drone sounds and found audio clips of children from Gaza, remixed by myself and my cousin Salem Yateem. The footage projected onto the magic carpet was taken from satellite/aerial imagery of Gaza before the genocide and after, then animated in After Effects. The cutouts in the metal, creating light patterns on the floor beneath the suspended carpet, are a Palestinian embroidery motif commonly known as the “Bethlehem Star.”
